How To Write Your Career Summary in Resume (with Sample)
After a thorough search and wait, you've finally found the job of your dreams which you want to apply for.
Now, the onus of convincing the hiring manager about your worthiness is the next strategy and you’re not alone—there are a thousand others applying for the same job. The way you’ll set yourself apart from these people is your resume's career summary.
For ages now, it has replaced the objective statement of the resume and serves as a basic introduction to what you’re bringing to the table. How to create an impactful summary of qualifications?
Let’s have a look at the basic points -
- Include statements and phrases to describe yourself and your accomplishments
- Use profile related keywords
- Use parallel construction and strong action verbs
- Qualify achievements whenever possible
- Emphasize numbers by using a numeric form instead of using word forms
- Mention the key positions you might have held as it becomes a screening criterion at many organizations.
1. Research Hard
Remember how you used to ask questions related to word meanings in your childhood and were egged on by your teacher to look it up in the dictionary? This is the same, except it’s a bit more detailed. Your research needs to be in-depth and accurate about the job you’re going to take up.
Write down the list of those particular powerful descriptive words which you can use in your summary. The better the match, the greater chances of you landing up the job.
2. Sell Yourself
Yes, you need to put yourself out there in the best light possible. Introspect and put
down a list of your special skills, abilities, and achievements. A list of your three best attributes should do the trick. Try to align that with the research done above. It should also matter to the job you’re applying for. Push that something special, that X factor forward. It should be evident you’re the best fit for the job.
3. Showcase Expertise
You need to show authority and expertise by showing how your past work experience has contributed to your personal and professional growth and by showing the number of years you’ve put into that particular job function. You need to be specific about your expertise. You can’t be an expert in everything, so highlight those few skills or areas or subjects that you know like the back of your hand, which will you the edge and a boost of confidence when you have to talk about it in the interview.
4. Keep it Clean
The career summary sample also follows a certain way in which it’s to be written. It’s always better to follow a standard format for it too. Of course, the format and the style of writing might vary with the industries you’re applying to, but there are certain ground rules which if followed, will really help in the summary looking clean.
Use a bullet list as much as possible and avoid long paragraphs. Don’t get tempted to use more stylish fonts and colors. You also don’t need to add images. Most importantly, stick to the same format and design you’re using in the rest of the resume.
5. Proofread
Most important and underrated is proofreading. You need to check your summary for its effectiveness. Is it serving the purpose? Does it throw attention in the right places? Check for spelling mistakes. This is the last place you want spelling mistakes to happen. Follow these tips to write a persuasive career summary sample!
